I just began flagging very recently, but my friends say the I am already pretty good. I’ve been spinning glowsticks for 4 years and djing for 4 years, so flags were easy to transition to. As a Filipino-American I incorporated the Filipino art of using fans and scarves into my flagging. It makes my flagging more unique yet elegant. I go with the flow of the music, whether its a down tempo break or an up tempo hi-energy beat. Once i’m flagging on the stage or in the corner, I won’t stop until I run out of breath or one of my fellow flaggers wants to perform.
I feel that glowsticks have died out, at least in Chicago. Flagging is a more eye-appealing art cause every time i pull out my flags, most people become amazed partly cause some of them had never seen flagging before. Most stand there and watch, and people ALWAYS come up to me afterwards and cheer me on for a job well done.
I’ve been flagging only since the beginning of March 2004. Although now it seems like i’ve been flagging for a year. I carry my flags EVERYWHERE I GO. I had watch my best friend Randy Kutchinski and my good friend Ron Geronimo flag ALL the time at many clubs for over the past year. I had tried it once a year ago but wasn’t able to get the flag to spin. Then at the end of February 2004 Randy and I were hanging out with Mandy and Xavier. Randy, Mandy, and Xavier took turns flagging. It was so cool, a non-stop flag show for hours. Then Xavier asked me if I wanted to learn. He taught me the very very basic moves. After that first flagging lesson, I WAS HOOKED. I asked Ron to lend me a pair of flags and have been practicing and performing ever since.
My first flagging experience occurred on Friday March 5, 2004 at Hunter’s Nightclub in Elk Grove Village, IL. I wasn’t nervous or anything. But one of my favorite songs “Deborah Cox – Absolutely Not” came on. I told everyone on the box to get off cause I was gonna flag. So I get up on the box as the intro begins, and then when the chorus began, I exploded into flagging mode. A lot of people were amazed cause they were always used to me spinning glowsticks. I suprised a lot of my friends, cause at the time I had only been flagging for 5 days. My friends couldn’t believe that I just learned flagging 5 days earlier, cause I was doing a lot of hard moves.
I have 2 major performances that were my best flagging experiences. #1. Flagging in Las Vegas for Kristine W. at Paris Hotel for New Year’s Eve Party 2005. The rush…..The thrill….The experience.. Wow I’ll never forget that night. Thanks Phillip for getting me connected with this experience. #2 Flagging at Circuit on my birthday August 21, 2005 for Sauci Bernaise. It was one of the few performances in Chicago where the Chicago flaggers get together. WOW what a night.
My best friend Randy Kutchinski inspired me to become a flagger as well as Joel Rodriguez, Ron Geronimo, and my two other favorite flaggers, Mandy and Xavier!!!! All have them have been teaching me new moves every week. They all make flagging seem so easy!
I went to Las Vegas the weekend of May 1. 2004. On Friday Night I went with my friends adn family to Drais’ After Hours. I was flagging there all night long and most of the people there never saw flagging before. When I got tired, they still wanted me to spin some more, People thought that flagging was so cool. Afterwards, with the sun coming up my friends and I were so trashed outside of Drais, we sat outside for over an hour waiting for the group to congregate after coming from the club or from gambling. THAT whole hour or so, I non-stopped flagged outside in the warm weather. You could hear the music still from the outside. I never put my hands down that whole time. Passers-by were watching all amazed. Even some girls from Houston, TX took pictures of me flagging cause It looked cool. The next night I went to my sister-in-law’s bachelorette party, we were all so trashed that the girls asked me to strip, then they were tearing my clothes off. Then they asked me to flag for them. So I flagged in the hotel room for about an hour while we were all getting really really drunk. Then. My cousin Rose and I went to Gipsy’s. We were already trashed at that point. Of course I brought my flags. I kicked everyone off the box when “Whitney Houston – Try It On My Own” came on. I started flagging. I don’t think many people there had ever seen flagging before, cause they were all amazed and lots of people came up to me about it. It was so much fun flagging in Las Vegas.
I get most of my sets from Phillip. Thanks!!!! I also make my own solid color and lame flag sets now, but there not nearly as good as Phillip’s
Nowadays i mostly flag in the park and at home. I do sometimes go out to Circuit, Hydrate, or Hunter’s and flag there
Gold or silver silk flags in a spotlight have the coolest effect then flagging. People alwys make comments when those are used.
How can you flag for so long? You’ve been flagging for hours? Aren’t are arms falling off? – Anonymous
If you think you can’t do a move, DON’T GIVE UP! Ask other flaggers questions and hints. We ALL were beginners once.
Flagging with Phillip is one of my ultimate goals.. Phillip, you’ve helped me A LOT more than you know. THANKS for EVERYTHING!!!!
I hope to give my flags to someone that will carry the Flagging legacy because it is a beautiful art that should be shared throughout this world
