Super Star - the design of the star
After the success and
wonderfully positive
reception of the the
Heart sculpture, we
were ready for
something really
special.
Whereas the heart was
organic and curvy, I
wanted the holiday star
to be very angular and
spikey.
I’d been wanting to create
a piece based on this shape
for quite a while, and here
was my opportunity.
I created this paper model
to check my math and see
if the proportions looked
right.
That’s what I wanted, and
on the first try--hey, not
bad. Now, if everything
*else* is just that
straightforward.
I worked out what I’d use
for construction materials
and came up with (what
I thought was) a clever
method for building the
star in segments.
It took a *lot* of
thinking... that’s probably
why I think it’s clever.
Cozi took one look at my
first frame and decided
she’d found a new
favorite spot.
I wanted to have the best
material for the surface
of the star, so I started
experiementing.
I pulled out some lame’
flags to check for color
and translucency.
(Yes, I do make lame’
flags!)
While checking options,
I even tried things like
wrapping paper.
Cheap and easy!
But...
yuck.
Moving on...
While I was experimenting,
Cozi found the blue lame’...
Ok, nothing in there...
What’s next?
I also tried silk.
It’s wasn’t what
I was going for,
but this picture
could make a
dandy Christmas
card.
"Cozi would like
to wish you..."
Cozi takes off
for her favorite
spot again...
It’s seems she’s
always finding
interesting
places to enjoy.
After finishing up the
pieces for the star,
I realized that it
would be so large
that we’d need
something of
medium scale
to tie everything
together.
So I created these
ornaments, just four
foot tall each.
("Just" four foot...
heh heh!)
