My History

How would you describe yourself as a flagger?

Zen.

Flagging is all 10 points of the compass. DeepShallow, privatepublic, safedangerous, studentteacher and all of the layers of my being.

It means very much to me and I don’t care about anything else in the world when I have a big empty dance floor, a hot DJ and plenty of blacklight. It is healthy and beautiful… there is a mind-body-soul CONNECTION and interconnectivity… just doing it makes me happy, very happy. I have "seen the light".

What is it about flagging that you enjoy the most?

What I enjoy most about flagging….. everything. The people mostly.

How long have you been flagging? How did you get started?

I’ve been flagging 3 or 4 years. I started in The Pines and blossomed there a year later. (thanks Dennis!!)

What was your first flagging experience?

My first flagging experience was seeing Thom and Scott Ford fanning at the Pavillion. I saw love. I saw two souls dancing in their aura.

If you know me, you know I only stop dancing to get water. That day, I sat down and watched them for about 45 minutes.

I had to learn how to do THAT!!! I started that day

One year later, after going to George Jagatic’s FLOW class, marching in the Pride parade and basically looking like I was spin drying my laundry…. I was back in the Pines… and then I met Dennis… he kept me going and I got it. I GOT IT… and I haven’t stopped since.

What was one of your best flagging experiences?

All of my flagging experiences are phenomanal!! There is no best. What is the best breath you’ve ever taken? This is my life and I am changed forever.

Who has inspired or taught you?

Thom and Scott Ford – Flag Daddy’s (I’m a honeymoon baby!!)
George Jagatic – unending patient mentor and Big Daddy.
David Gosbin – Always smiling, an inspiration for life – bodhisattva.
Dennis Snow – popped my cherry. I will love him until the day I die.

What was one of your wildest or craziest flagging experiences?

NYC Pride Parade ‘05. Deep in the village where the buildings are close and the people are closer. In the apartment windows; people living life, making love, yelling at children… on the streets; people smiling, making love, dancing…

Michael Jackon’s "So you wanna be startin’ sumthing" blasts on the PA. We’re flagging on the float, bouncing and the crowd is singing and smiling with us. We are one! Blackwhite, StraightGay… it didn’t matter – we are one.

Looking back and seeing rainbow flags the length of 5th Avenue and these wonderful beautiful people… they are my brothers and sisters.

Do you make your own sets? Can you describe what kind you make?

I make my own sets half the time. Primarily, I make sets at flagging workshops; silks and tie dye. But, I’ve been playing with fabrics and weights. Had a ball the other night by tying a knot in a t-shirt (for weight) and flagging. how’s that for old school?
