How would you describe yourself as a flagger?

I would consider myself as an intermediate flagger. I make my own flags as well as make flags for others on occassion. I haven’t played with the very fine silk or the tie dying yet…but I might soon. (There are some wonderful flags on this site!). I usually dance with the flags and to the beat more of a rythmic dancer. If it’s high tempo expect a strong breeze coming from me. If it’s a slow passionate song the flags will be close and dragging across my body. It depends on the music and my mood, but love it when I lose myself in the music and flags.

What is it about flagging that you enjoy the most?

That’s a tough one. Sometimes it’s just the look of amazement on a person’s face. Feeling that I’m inspiring some creative thought or just giving them something to stare at to free their mind.

How long have you been flagging? How did you get started?

I had seen flaggers at some of the events I attended and really thought it added a special something, but I never dared approach them…they MUST be part of the show and I didn’t want to disturb them. Luckily one night at a local club I noticed a couple flagging. I approached and they were more than happy to show me a little about them. It wasn’t until much later that I finally started playing with a set that I had purchased. The rest, as they say, is history. :)

What was your first flagging experience?

Geez, I think it would have to be Halloween in Chicago back in 2001…I think. I think it was called Pumpkinfest.

What was one of your best flagging experiences?

I would have to say Dancing in the streets held in Cleveland, OH. It was the first time I got to meet a large part of the flagging family from NY, Detroit, and several parts of the US of A. It was also my first and sadly my last time I got to hear BUC spin. May he rest in peace.

Who has inspired or taught you?

Since I rarely do things either in the right order or by the book, I would probably say that I was sort of a bastard child flagger in the beginning until two very good and kind friends took me in under their wings and became my foster flag-daddies, Tom and Scott, who have since moved to New York and had a commitment ceremony. To them I owe a great debt. Because they showed me that there are still good people in the world and it is not just a cold driven force running the universe. They gave me the most precious gift of hope when I most needed it. To Scott and Tom, where-ever you are, Thank You and God Bless. :)
