My first set of 2007, another new idea, some new dyes, but not something I am that happy with. The center pattern is very pretty but the outside colors did not deliver exactly what I hoped for, but that is the learning experience. This was my first time to play with 2 new dyes - Flavine Yellow and Rhodamine - A nice new addition to my pallet.
These flags were gifted to Seth - his first set of silks.
Another interesting tie for me - creating a square around the circle and the having some color contrasts on the outside. Nothing extremely amazing about this set, but the yellow really pops with the orange and red in the black light.
I gave these to Mykel from Access Dance at the Black Party 2007. These were a gift for all the hard work and drama he sustained to organize the space for the flaggers at this party.
These were made as a pair of matched sets. I folded the silk together in hopes of learning how to make matched sets for the ForePlay flaggers. This was a first attempt, and if I do say so myself, the best work I have ever done.
The concept was to develop a fan patter on the flag with dark veins and splashes of bright colors. I used Rhodamine, Pylam, Flavine Yellow, and Jet Black on these - a second attempt with black, and the use of very saturated dyes. The flags are very subtle in regular light and really pop the blues and yellows in the black light.
These are called wormholes (for Dan) because they are a matched set. The 1st pair is with Daniel Van Olst and the I retain the second pair. The concept is that whenever we spin them, wherever we are, a wormhole will open to connect the two places - ok it is corny, but it heart felt.
This set was made as a gift set to my friend Mike Shaw for his work with the Men’s Inner Journey and as my facilitator for that program. This is a double rainbow with some special meanings of how life works in circles - sometimes circles merge and you go off in new paths, but ultimately you do find your way around again.
This is my first 5mm set. Made during my first hosting for a tie dye party. I made these sets while teaching others about how to paint dyes onto the fabric.
Appropriately I gave these to my good friend Robert S. at the Unity Pride T-Dance at Ten15 in San Francisco. He loves bigger lighter weight flags and flew these beautifully.
How appropriate that for my 40th set, I make what I would say is by far my greatest work of art. These are on 8mm silk, and were a wedge fold. I was not sure as I painted the colors onto the silk what I would end up with, I was really just playing. The end result was so pretty and really wowed the guys during the tie dye event I hosted in June at my home.
Under black light these have an amazing blend from the light blue to the purple that becomes translucent and has a beautiful effect. I do not plan to ever give these away - these are a keeper.
