My History

How would you describe yourself as a flagger?

Am interactive learner, teacher, admirer, and promoter.

As an interactive learner: I watch flaggers all the time, seeing how they flow and move. This helps me understand and follow in some of the best art out there.

As a teacher: I will take the time to show anyone who asks how to fly flags. I love the experiences of holding someones hands and guiding them through the motions (it can be fun, exciting, and sometimes give you a chance to hold onto a real cute guy).

As an admirer: I take stock in the beauty of the art that is created and in the visualizations and shows put on to enhance the music the DJ spins.

As a promoter: I share my stories, experiences and encourage others to join the tribe of flaggers. This group is truly one of the most loving and caring groups of people I know.

Overall, I am inspired by the people who flag with me and share with me (Dan, Phillip, Randy, John, and Robert – to name a few). I am engaged by the music. I am exploring the spiritual side to my flagging experiences. I feel all the warmth and love this trip has to offer.

What is it about flagging that you enjoy the most?

I love spinning and flagging becuase of the ability to express my feelings about the music. I also love when I am flagging and someone sits down and watches and gets enjoyment from my actions. I think it is absolutely amazing when people think you are a paid act from the club, and you tell them you just do it because you love it.

How long have you been flagging? How did you get started?

I started in 2004 when my partner brought his flags along to an event and I started to play with them. Now I take them with me all the time. Funny how fast you can make your partner a flagging widdw.

What was your first flagging experience?

A small burning man party in SF.

What was one of your best flagging experiences?

White Party 2007 – Palm Springs – Closing Party – Sunday Night

Phillip brought his glow stick flags to Palm Springs with the hopes of getting a group of us to take the flags out and put on a show. Finally, Sunday night we prepared the flags and brought them to the closing party in the ballroom at the hotel.

Sometime after midnight, and at a break when the go-go dancers came down of the boxes. Phillip, Daniel, John W. and I, grabbed the glow stick flags and headed to each of the go-go boxes. As the dancers stepped down we stepped up. I watched across the room and when I saw the glow of Phillip’s face, I cracked my glow sticks too. The glow sticks are the high intensity fire stick that glow fast and hot – about 5 amazingly bright minutes.

We all stood up, and took the boxes for a show. It was so beautiful to look out and see the other three guys spinning away and glowing on the boxes above the crowds. The lights were kept down, presuming the lighting guy noticed what was going on, and you could hear some wow statements from the crowd as we stepped up.

Following the performance, a friend asked us if we were paid to be there that night. We were not, but in a way we were. The energy from the crowd, the adrenaline rush, the joy of performing my first time with Phillip and John and Dan was all I needed. I think I flew higher that night than any other time in my life.

Who has inspired or taught you?

My initial exposture to flagging was all self taught – taking moves I had learned spinning poi.

I eventually got into Xavier classes at Gold’s and the rest is history.

Daniel has been one of my biggest inspirations and supporters – he shows me moves, encourages me to perform, encouraged me to get a group together to perform (Foreplay Flaggers) at a club event, taught me to create flags, and consistently is there as a friend.

What was one of your wildest or craziest flagging experiences?

I was flagging at the Black Party in 2006, and a latino man came up to me and offered me $500 for my flags. I would not accept, and he did not understand why. I told him that I had bought the flags and loved them very much (thanks Phillip) and that I could not part with a treasured item like them. He continued to persist in asking me to buy them several times that night, and when I would not he started asking other flaggers. Very interesting.

Do you make your own sets? Can you describe what kind you make?

I made my first set on August 7, 2006 with the help of Daniel Van Olst. I had an absolute blast learning the art.

When things settled down from the summer of activities I actually started to do my own sets. Check out my galleries – you will see each set as I make them as well as the sets I have either been gifted or purchased.

The sets I make are simple folds and tie dye patterns. My skills in the art are developing and I am enjoying learning.

Where do you often like to flag?

Honestly? I do not often leave home without flags. I take them on all my business and personal trips. I flagged in Munich, Ft. Lauderdale, Disney World, New York, Albuquerque, Burning Man, etc.

I am often enjoying flagging most when I am with friends who either enjoy the art or are flaggers themselves. I rarely pass up a dance event with a flagging stage. I am starting to also travel to more events that have flagging, including a trip to the Black Party in 2006, and many more I hope in 2007.

What are your favorite types of flags to work with, and why?

My favorite flags are often the ones that are gifts, and there is nothing more wonderful than flying flags that someone asks you to fly for them or gives you. I love when one of my flagging friends, buddies, or acquaintances asks me to flag with a set they own – I am honored at that offer.

What are your favorite flagging quotes?

Maybe I have burned too many brain cells to remember this, but I am sure that I have one or two that will come to me. Sometimes the best thing from flagging is sitting with someone watching a friend flag, looking at each other, and without saying a word knowing what is going on (right Dan?)

What advice do you give to beginning flaggers?

Just do it – get up there – give it a shot – let your hands orchestrate a show – let go. There is no better time to try then when you are flags are with you, the stage is ready, the black light is on, and you are loving the music. I have found that is the time when the flags dance on their own.

What nice/unusual comment has anyone said to you while flagging?

Well, I hear many nice things. The nicest thing is to have friends say how much they enjoyed watching me flag during an event, or when I give a show to someone who soaks it all in and thanks me for making a special moment for them.

Overall I just love when people make positive input and share a little bit of their enthusiasm for flagging. I am often surprised at home many people will be complimentary and ask about the art form and they are surprised to learn it is a personal hobby/craft as well.

Do you have an ultimate flagging experience that you would like to achieve, but have not yet?

Yes – I have performed with 3 great guys in San Francisco (Bob, Robert and Daniel) but ultimately I would like to get that into something bigger, maybe get Phillip and Xavier to join us, as well as getting as many flaggers as we could, and do something to open a Giants or 49ers game or something like that.

Do you have a wish for what happens to your flags after you leave this world?

Well, I certainly do not want them to go with me. My flags carry with them the energy of everyone who has ever flown them, watched them, etc. I want my flags to go to someone or several someone’s that will continue to take them out and play with them. I want them to enjoy a long life of parties, play and fun.

What are your favorite songs to flag to?

Well, I certainly do not want them to go with me. My flags carry with them the energy of everyone who has ever flown them, watched them, etc. I want my flags to go to someone or several someone’s that will continue to take them out and play with them. I want them to enjoy a long life of parties, play and fun.

My friend Kennon Jackson lost his flag bag at Real Bad this last Sunday

(1015 Folsom, San Francisco, on September 27, 2009). He’s not a member of

SpinTribe so he asked me to post this for him.

It is a two-toned black & charcoal Quicksilver Backpack that contains about 4 to 5 sets of flags in the back zip pocket. The front zip pocket contains our two t-shirts: one green short-sleeved t-shirt and a white tank top.

He would really love to get it back. If you have it, please send me a message or email and

I will put you in touch with him.

    Thanks much!

    Dan

Flagging at The Disco – San Francisco PRIDE   2 years, 11 months ago · View

    Hello Flaggers -

I am searching for flaggers and flow artists that will be comfortable performing
on either side of the DJ booth on the night of the party. While the stage will
be open off and on to flaggers, fanners, poi spinners and all flow artists,
around the performance schedule, the boxes on the side of the DJ booth will be
reserved for flow artists wanting to perform.

Flow artists wanting to perform, preferably in pairs, should contact me with a
preferred time spot they can be available. Flow artists performing on the boxes
per the schedule will get the following benefits:
    - Upgrade to VIP ticket with purchase of regular ticket
    - VIP entrance and access
    - VIP coat check
    - VIP room access
    - Green room access
    - VIP gift bag

The schedule for the boxes would be as follows:
    10:30PM – 11:00PM – 2 slots
    11:45PM – 12:15AM – 2 slots
    12:15AM – 12:45AM – 2 slots
    01:30AM – 0:200AM – 2 slots

Please pick two 30 minute windows and contact me with your preferences and
contact information off this board at jphauck at juicyfruitjim dot com. If I
get enough interest I will only need you for one window and will fill based on
    preferences and first requests.

I hope to hear from you. We had a great deal of fun with this at the last disco
    and it was greatly appreciated.

Visiting San Francisco this week   2 years, 11 months ago · View

    Allan –

A little shameless plug here – I have a blog highlighting
the club scene in San Francisco – http://www.juicyfruitjim.com
This has a good listing of what is happening in SF at any given weekend.
My blog for this weekend will go live tomorrow.

Sadly, as I say that, and am reviewing the events coming up this
weekend, it appears we have gone into PRIDE wait mode with everyone saving
events for next weekend for the big Pride Blow out.  Friday I have listed Ghetto
Disco at the End Up, where some of us have flagged out on the patio on any
given evening. Saturday is a party called Launch at the Regency Center, being
run by our dance radio station Energy 92.7.  While I do not know how
flagger friendly this event will be, I do believe there will be flaggers at the
space.  It is a large ballroom space with room to dance.
