My History

How would you describe yourself as a flagger?

Generally Spanish style – I guess I would call it (much passion!) Flamenco/Matador fusion is my goal. I like doing air tosses! I’ve come up with Ultimate Flagging (like ultimate frisbee) – it’s a great way to play/dance with other flaggers!

I dare to do on the dance floor with flags what I’m too shy to do otherwise.

Anger, or a great sadness finds release thru the music and my flags – thank God for this outlet! They say you’re at your creative peak when you’re at your lowest.

A maniac! I virtually always have at least one pair of flags on me – even when going to work! You never know when the urge will strike! I’ve done it in the subway while waiting on a train at 3am!

What is it about flagging that you enjoy the most?

Emotional and physical expression, extension of myself, and stress release. It reminds me of rhythmic gymnastics ( I just did regular gymnastics – this would go well in a floor routine) and my baton days. Also reminds me of Tai Chi, … and martial arts w/weapon (knunchucks, which I practice)…and the samurai swordmanship.

Showing little kids!

Sharing one of my most powerful true joys with people!

How long have you been flagging? How did you get started?

Became aware of it in Atlanta circuit scene in 2000 – strangers let me try it. Then by 2001, started borrowing a pair to do it in the clubs (I only knew back and forth – but showed much potential, and emerging spanish style).

What was your first flagging experience?

What was one of your best flagging experiences?

Anytime people start asking questions about our artform and want to learn! Also, of course, when the crowd goes crazy taking snapshots! I feel so proud to be part of this resurgence of the flagging movement – especially as a woman.

Who has inspired or taught you?

I have so far to go, so much to accomplish as far as what I want my flagging to reflect. I’m my worst critic.

The dear gentleman – Phillip Bryan! It certainly was an honor working with him…and getting to know him.

George of AxisDanz – My Instructor, and mentor in flagging, as well as life. Such happy fun-filled energy! Good Karma! I learn so much on music interpretation. He always challenges me to do something I don’t want to do, or something I’m frusturated with (getting nowhere), but then I’m so ever grateful! – Thanks, George! Love you!

My own burning desire to extend / elaborate the feeling of the music .

David Gosbin (student/dancer with Axisdanz)- my partner in crime, my buddy, my duet partner. Amazing how a man can convey such smoothness and sensuality – and in such a great package of virility! I’m always in awe when I watch this man – such beauty in his flagging ….and his soul. I love you David! I hope someday, to learn to ease up and not rush it, as David does – Go Marines!

Felipe G – Such a suave and intuitive Brazilian flagger! Such great style!. Flags with such ease and calm! All the best flaggers are latin! God must be Brazilian!

What was one of your wildest or craziest flagging experiences?

NYC parade – people were screaming!
- Oh!, what to do with such fans?…..lol

Do you make your own sets? Can you describe what kind you make?

tyedyed silk blue/green….the sky & sea.

Where do you often like to flag?

the pier at hudson river park, central park, events, and circuit parties, Washington Sq. Park

What are your favorite types of flags to work with, and why?

Large ones!!

My fav at the moment…..My Gay Games set that Philip made for me!

Any colorful large silk flags
My big banger set

What are your favorite flagging quotes?

"It is what it is" By Phillip B.

I learned much from performing:
Just take things as they come. Learn to adjust quickly to changes. Nothing is set in stone.

What advice do you give to beginning flaggers?

flag how you want to flag – how you interpret the music- Its a very personal thing. My style is genuinely from my heart. No one can tear you down when it comes from there.

What nice/unusual comment has anyone said to you while flagging?

Most of the time I don’t smile when I’m flagging…..what a curse! People tend to misread that. I’m trying so hard to improve on that.

passionate…
