What a wonderful new site, Phillip! We had a nice set of dances in NYC recently, with Sassy Bitch Confessions (Phillip & Peggy) & TOTM III in January, and then Odyssey (with Susan and Candida) the night after Black Party. The East Coast family (and visitors to NYC) are alive and well! Mitch Bodholdt & I are already booked to attend Folsom in September, and it will be my 3rd year in a row. Thanks for everyone’s wonderful assist & input at Flagger workshop over July 4th everyone! My beach blanket sized blue-green AVATAR flags have been greeted positively. Joe LaMattina at Odyssey facebooked me: Ive been AVATAR’d! Happy Spring, everyone. HUGZZZ Jack

New Flagger…HELP!!! 2 years, 11 months ago · ViewHello, Randy & welcome to the tribe! Locating how to flag & spin information on Flagger Central- on its front page is rather easy now:The tabs/indexing towards the top are pretty easy to work with. There are now 5 or 6 articles under the tab for RESOURCES, then hold your mouse down to get to its second subject down: Flag Dancing. There are other very good resources, but this is an excellent start. You may also consider joining the many spinners & poi people that are attending Flagger Weekend 6. It starts Thursday and/or Friday of July 4th weekend in Dallas. Phillip Bryan and many others in the team head up the best workshop around!! Expect 75-90 people there for the 3-4 days. I went to TFW 5 and it is life-changing! Hope you can come on such short notice. Otherwise, look towards New York City for the best large flagger-friendly parties in the Mid-Atlantic/East Coast area. Good luck in your journey.Jack Gerard WDCPS Email me if you will be in the DC area sometime. It is a bit scarce for club flagging, but there are some options. More are available in Rehoboth, but that is far for some of us.Download the AOL Classifieds Toolbar for local deals at your fingertips. -

Looking for hope in Denver … 2 years, 11 months ago · ViewHi Mitch,
Ive been there with you many times and you are a most lovely flagger, and have never been one to impose yourself in anyone’s space. You wrote a wonderful and very diplomatic letter, and I think the Tracks management will respond positively. Let’s just hope this is not “new policy” but a bad night on the part of a clueless night manager. Many of us flag & fan before the “main crowd” gets there in our clubs, as it is sad that more clubs dont feature/allow more flagger-friendly space. Since Nation closed, Washington DC has been a very poor city for flagging in clubs. We have to resort to going to other cities to flag!
It is quite a blow to one’s heart & ego, when asked to cease our flagging. It is still one of the things that mystifies me about flagging, especially in popular GLBT venues. Good luck & I hope this is quickly resolved in your favor!
Your buddy & brother in art and dance,
Jack Gerard

Instructor certification — discount details! 3 years, 8 months ago · ViewTo Issa and Peggy, and all of the other excellent posters that have
spoken up on this "silk thread", thank you!I wanted to say that this has dramatically opened up quite a dialogue
that perhaps could have happened even sooner than this:
the inevitable merging of two very similar artistic cultures, but
each with its own unique social characteristics. Poi Spinning is a
bit "different" to most of us that flag & fan in a more traditional
GLBT setting. I started noticing poi spinners at Grateful Dead shows
several years back. And then, before I ever flagged, I was amazed by
the poi & glostix spinners at raves & alternative music gatherings.
The glowstix on strings could be frightening to some, because of the
distance required to stand back. It is similar, but in a different
way it required more room, than that required by flaggers. Then many
clubs started to ban "glostix on strings" and I was one of those
pissed off by that rule, even though this protected the club owners.
Then I learned to flag & fan from a few of my dear mothers and
daddies, brothers and sisters, which I will truly treasure and be
eternally thankful for. However, since many clubs no longer allow glostix on strings, it is
harder to mentor and teach poi in a club-like setting. One has to
seek out more alternative dance festivals & gatherings like many held
in the Portland and San Francisco areas. And at Burning Man. Many are
held outdoors. And one very big event is held every New Year’s in San
Francisco. That is called Sea of Dreams. And on the East Coast, we
have Gaian Mind once a year at Four Quarters Farm.I’m trying to make a couple of points here. I am fascinated by this
growing art form, and want to see more of it. Not many of us can get
to one of these festivals for various reasons. The hippie/alternative
lifestyle may be off-putting to many of us, but the ART is definitely
there, and well worth SHARING with more of us! And if it is taught
in a structured setting, that is great. And to effectively teach
some to future instructors, that is even better!Last year in May of 2007, I attended the Texas Flaggers Workshop in
Dallas, and was amazed at how many of our group have done some poi,
and how several regularly practice poi. At our after-hours pool
party 12 or 13 of our group performed fire poi – and two people did
it for the very first time! It was truly fascinating and mesmerizing.
So if Issa can teach more folks to carry the torch to other areas of
the country and the world, and make it more "mainstream", that would
be wonderful. Don’t we all love to go to Cirque Du Soleil and see it
performed? I could not make it this year to the Texas Flagger
Workshop, but I know that Issa was there. This merging of the
poi/flagger/fanning community is inevitable, healthy and so
exciting! Perhaps most of us will never be able to perform with fire
at clubs, but just to see regular poi being performed artistically in
dance festivals and clubs is welcomed. We can all learn (and teach) even more from each other.
With love & respect,

Saint At Large SALEM Halloween Party Fanners/Flaggers/Friends going? 3 years, 8 months ago · ViewI’m just trying to get a guage on who in Spin Tribe (and their friends)
are planning on going to The Saint At Large SALEM Halloween Party on
Sat. November 1st at Roseland. The website does not list DJ’s, or does
Box Office Tix, but I hear it will be Junior Vasquez & Jonathan Peters.
Is that correct? Please reply back if you have any comments and if you
have heard if folks are going. Thanks!

REACTION Sunday 1/20 in DC >>> One Pair of FLAGS FOUND!! 4 years, 4 months ago · ViewHello Folks,
Of those of you that attended the MAL Reaction dance, Joe Morris found one pair of flags about 2 ‘ by 3 ‘ with white and blue squares with some yellow/orange mixed in. He said that someone left a stack of flags on top of his bag, and he separated them out… but when he got home there was one pair in his bag that are not his. Please reply to this post @ Spin Tribe, and/or to Joe Morris at cuirlash@… or his cell # 202 255 3657
Joe lives in Washington. And if you know someone that lost a pair, and they dont see/view this site, please let them know, OK?
Thanks so much, Jack Gerard for Joe Morris -

It is a 4-4 1/2 hour drive (depending on weekend traffic) , or about
200 miles. Train is easier, but much more expensive. -

Mid Atlantic Leather Weekend in DC: Reaction Dance with Warren Gluck 4 years, 4 months ago · ViewHello folks,
If anyone is in DC for MAL weekend in January (during MLK, JR.
weekend)…does anyone know yet if they will provide stage access
again this year for fanners & flaggers? The Reaction Dance on Sunday
will again be held at The 930 Club, and last year they made a special
arrangement for the stage all night for fanners/flaggers! It was
fabulous, and so was Warren Gluck. Warren, if you read this, can you
please reply with a post to Spin Tribe and/or to me directly? Thanks so much & Happy New Year!

Information about Fluorescent Blue Dye 4 years, 7 months ago · ViewHey Folks,What a fascinating topic on my favorite color: blue! And thanks, Xavier for pointing out blue glow from white space on silk. I first noticed blue glowing from white fabric in a splendid pair of fans that Larry Reigel made me. That fabulous medium light blue was emanating from white fabric that he used, contrasting with the yellow/green “feathers” he sewed on the ends.
My Mom was a water colorist and she taught me to liberally use white space in her compositions. Mom said that white was just as important and had even more emotional impact than color! So, at Texas Flaggers Workshop IV I tried that theory in a spiral
tie-dye. I soaked a lot of different colors in my rainbow spiral “pie”, but left some of the fabric white. I intended for the white to remain in little bits. Well, an over-abundance of white was at first a “mistake” but….it ended up looking like spokes on a spinning wheel, and LOTS & LOTS of glowing blue light emanates!! Not so great in daylight, but heavenly when they spin in blacklight!
So, try it, and save yourself the aggravation (and cost) of finding a perfect blue.

A warm nurturing environment 5 years, 1 month ago · ViewI dont want to beat a dead horse, but I completely agree with what others have had to say recently here. We as a Tribe, really do go out of our way to be open and nurturing, and to stay out of the negative element of what can & does go on sometimes at some “Circuit Parties”. What we had at Roseland was a repeat performance of a very positive experience, which some of us have upheld for many years at selected dance events. Perhaps attending such events will change perceptions. Just a thought, but I do respect choice. We are and have been inviting all try it. There will always be events in various venues, and I welcome you to try just one.My two cents. I think we are, as a whole, a very special group, no matter what city or country we are in and that we should recognize & nurture that perpetuity. Hence, what Jim “Juicy Fruit” is continuiing to do this year at Burning Man, also! With love, Jack GerardEdited with love by the moderator

Mid Atlantic Leather Reaction dance 5 years, 4 months ago · ViewOh my God, EricI did not realize that you were the guy up on the left flagging early, before most of us. I should have introduced myself, as we emailed each other the week before. And as you said, it was FABULOUS in so many ways! Warren Gluck, as always, played a BEAUTIFUL journey, plus he gave us the nice gentler morning music in the last hour or so. I do believe it was Warren’s influence, and John Niederhuser (who is one of the best light magicians anywhere), who worked so well with DANNY, the Event Manager of the Centaurs MC that planned this so well with the 930 Club staff! So lucky for us fanners/flaggers– as lately it has been quite dificult to get the venue, space and format for us to shine-since Nation closed. So thanks to all that gave us this very special gift for the Reaction Dance! You said: >>Second, I want to thank the flagger who worked with the promoter of Reaction at club 9:30. It made all the difference.<<I believe it may have been Stephen DeRose who was an advisory here. Or possibly Joe Morris?Sorry we did not get to meet, but i was admiring you up there, Eric-Mr. Palm Springs Leather!Jack Gerard, WDC -

Anyone going to Black & Blue? 5 years, 7 months ago · ViewHello Folks,I will be attending the Black & Blue festivities in Montreal and staying at the host hotel, the Delta Montreal from Sat night thru Monday night-and leaving on Tuesday. It is being held this coming Columbus Day weekend. B & B is always a blast, but I have not been since 1998.I’ve asked a few friends to go, but noone that I know of in our community is actually going this year. I’m still wondering if any fanners/flaggers/Poi people will be there. If so, please email me offline. It would be nice to meet up for at least one dance. Thanks,Jack Gerard WDC - Load More
