You are a very eloquent writer. Also a good business woman
to have built the business you have created. There is nothing wrong with
that. Not in the least. I have performed with some of the people
you have helped and they are beautiful performers.
I think you are striking a nerve with the idea of a
certification for training flow arts. Not with your products.
Not with your business plan. For those of us who have participated in
them for many years it is not a business, it is personal.
It is personal because it is a our history and roots.
This is not something we went to a school to learn. We were taught by
people who were close to us. Closer than our family in many cases. It
is a connection to a group, the tribe. We were taught by our fan/flag
mothers and fathers. Not by a trained instructor. Not by someone we
paid. We were taught by our family. It was taught out of
love. It was inclusive and exclusive in many ways.
Maybe it is because of the times that we were first exposed to fans
primarily. Fans were the first exposure to the “spin arts”
for many people of my generation. Poi was something they did at the
Polynesian shows.
Our fans were bound with a strip of leather from our (for me)fan
fathers. It was a very deep emotional bond formed at early stages and
early life years. These were people who helped guide us through our times
of self discovery. That is why people (myself included) may be disturbed by
the concept of being certified. It removes the personal connection that
we feel with our art. Something we were doing prior to any companies
existing to show us the way. Something we were doing in discotheques and
in the streets before there was a Burning Man or other now more mainstream environments.
We were the outsiders.
I have tried to carry that sense of love, of giving. Many
sets of flags have left my hands and been given, with some instruction, to many
people in several cities. I realize that very few people these days
have the opportunity to learn from others the way we once did. Although I
have never met a flagger who was not more than happy to help you learn a new
move or share techniques. I have held and assisted with tie dye and flag
making seminars. They fulfill a need for many people who would not
otherwise get that opportunity to learn.
I understand where you are coming from. And I do not want
to get involved in a long extended diatribe about this. I thought maybe
you may want to hear another perspective why this is something that could be
upsetting to others
I would be surprised if some others did not have similar
feelings after reading the post. Maybe I am wrong?

you know what is great about capitalism? Opportunity.
Capitalism is based on value for value exchange. That is, i sell
what i have to sell, and if you think there is value, you buy it.
If you don’t think there is value, well then, you simply don’t buy
it, do you?
what that also means is i wouldn’t be successfully in business for
6.5 years if i had such a money grubbing product that wasn’t of
value to offer, would I? People wouldn’t come back and pay more,
would they? it wouldn’t be the case that more than 60% of my
clients are repeat clients, would it?
what capitalism makes possible in the world is a place where
everyone can offer whatever it is they have to offer — which
means anyone can find a way to make a living as long as they can
fill a demand in the market place and are willing to do the work
necessary to make it happen.
there is a high demand for quality education out there — someone
who can give you the distictions of, say, how to perform a weave
behind the back and teach you the correct sequence of movements
necessary to create that pattern. whatever word you use to
describe that (art, instruction, hobby, performance, guidance,
coaching, somantic movement therapy, etc.), it is still a service
that is quite useful to people who want that level of
distinction.
You may not be someone interested in that. That does not make me
wrong for offering that service. Nor does it make the 1150+
(mostly repeat) clients i’ve had wrong for using such a service.
For anyone to sit around and publicly criticize me as a money
grubbing <you fill in the blank> for literally changing the lives
of hundreds of people for the better is really fascinating. Who
exactly do you think you are to be judging ANYONE else? Wow… I’m
blown away.
Peggy and anyone else sitting there thinking Peggy is "right": I
invite you to examine your judgments and open your heart. You may
not LIKE what i’m doing — and i have no issue with that — but I
have a right to do it and people have a right to pay for it. Your
judgment does NOTHING to support anyone and simply propagates
negative judgmental energy into the world. Is that who you want to
show up as, really?
And just because i want to be clear about what i mean by changing
client’s lives, here’s some testimonials from people, starting

Coliseum, Boom and VooDoo Lounge all have stages and
blacklights.
At the Coliseum, the stage is for flaggers/fanners and
performers ONLY. This weekend I believe Manny is spinning.
The stage at Boom is narrow and dancers are allowed up onto it.
Unfortunately, many of the dancers will not move aside for you to spin, instead
they will intentionally get in your way. Also, they frequently do not
understand English if you ask them to move aside for a moment.
VooDoo can be fun depending on who is spinning. They have a “ceiling
of blacklights” over the stage. So it can look quite fierce at times.

Saint’s At Large execute their NASCAR theme for this year.For those who don’t know me, I am an entertainer and flagging fellow of
Axis Danz and have performed at various venues, parades, etc… and was
recommended to help out with the "look" of the night. http://www.mykel.info I have probably flagged with
you at some pier dance too!Following is a timeline of colors they would like you all to bring
forth to spin and flail that will go in line with the projections they intend
to have going up:10PM-2:30AM green flags2:30-4 yellow flags
4-6 red flags
6-10 black
10-10:30 white (for the ticker tape
throwing)10:30-end checkered flags
(NOTE:there’s prime flagging space on the stage
next the bleachers.)Now, my immediate question to the community, does anyone NOT have a color
(or a cousin of the colors mentioned)? Start thinking what colors you have, don’t have and what slots you can most fill!!!I am going to inquire about the BLACK flags for 6-10 slot.
I will see if the lighting will provide something consistent for BLACK

Hello to all!
To answer a few question….
To gain stage and dressing room access your "pass" will be your
fans/flags. There is no written list this year. You will NOT be allowed
entrance to either area without your "pass".
As always, there is no charge for using the dressing rooms other than
your cooperation and help in policing the space.
We are a responsible group of adults. The only way to continue to have
this privilege is to behave well.
I have arranged to have SAL security at the top of the dressing room
stairs all night, however I have promised that we will take care of
ourselves downstairs. Party hearty, but remember that the dressing
rooms are our home for the night.
Thanking you in advance for your help as I will be asking for it!!!
