By Daniel Van Olst I am being watched by an audience of one. A warm night breeze blows off the desert and brushes my cheek, touches my flags, as they slide past my arms, my legs, my face. The only music is from the palms murmuring in the wind, far above me as I flag, as I [...]

Flag bag lost at Real Bad Sept 27   2 years, 7 months ago · View

My friend Kennon Jackson lost his flag bag at Real Bad this last Sunday
(1015 Folsom, San Francisco, on September 27, 2009). He’s not a member of
SpinTribe so he asked me to post this for him.

It is a two-toned black & charcoal Quicksilver Backpack that contains about 4 to
5 sets of flags in the back zip pocket. The front zip pocket contains our two
t-shirts: one green short-sleeved t-shirt and a white tank top.

He would really love to get it back. If you have it, please send me a message
    or email and
I will put you in touch with him.

    Thanks much!

Flag bag lost at Industry Sat Sept 26   2 years, 7 months ago · View

    Hello all:

Unfortunately I lost my flag bag at Industry (119 Utah San Francisco) this last
    Saturday, September 26.

It is a small, triangular bag, red and black, with my name (VANOLST) marked on
    it.

It has one set of flag poi in it. They have paintings of men on them that were
airbrushed onto them by a friend.

They have a great deal of sentimental value and I would dearly love to get them
    back,
    no questions asked!

Please send me a message if you have them!

    Thanks

    Dan

    Phillip,

Thanks so much to you (and Joseph, and whoever else
had a hand in this) for planning a special room for us
    flaggers, fanners, etc.

I am really looking forward to my second Black Party!

    Hugs

Instructor certification — discount details!   3 years, 8 months ago · View

I am a flagger and a poi dancer. My flag daddies are – in
no particular order -Phillip Bryan, Randy Earwood, and Isa Isaacs.

Each has supported me in their own way, in ways that I cannot
begin to describe. Their mentorship has been irreplaceable,
individual, and (dare I say it?) priceless.

But since the topic of this thread has been Isa, I will focus
my comments (for now, with my apologies to Randy and Phillip), on Isa.

I have taken many classes from Isa. I have felt that I have
always gotten better than my money’s worth. She, and her other
teachers, have always expected more of me than I did of myself.
Because of not only their skill, but also their faith, I have always
achieved more than I thought I possibly could.

Yes, I value the things that I have learned about flagging and
poi one-on-one from others deeply. But there are also things that i
had to learn – could only learn! – at Isa’s classes.

My personal journey – artistic, spiritual, emotional, physical -
is too important to sacrifice to any "ideal" of learning it this
way or that way. If I can only get some experiences by paying -
so be it! If I can have meaningful experiences where the medium of
exchange is simply what is my heart, and the other
person’s heart, then I want that too. I want it all. I deserve it.

And since I think other people deserve these choices also,
I think that events that are specifically targeted to the flagging
and poi community are OK on this group. I would like to see them.

Isa is a person of integrity, honesty, talent, and caring.
Yes, she does run a business, but she also gives back to the
community in many ways – donations, drives, performances,
mentorship – that cannot be measured in dollars.

As far as her teacher certification goes, I think from what I
have seen, she’s a great teacher. I have seen her teach many
different people who learn in many different sorts of ways. I am
sure that anyone who takes her class will come away with hugely
improved ability to teach and mentor others.

And, perhaps best of all, the community will have more teachers,
and more skilled teachers. I think that matters a lot.

Texas Flagger Weekend 5   3 years, 9 months ago · View

To all TFW5 organizers, instructors, volunteers, and participants:

I just wanted to say what a great weekend I had. It was so great seeing old friends and making new ones. I was impressed over and over again with everyone’s positive attitude, willingness to contribute, and openness to new experiences. Everyone present really made the event what it was, and I was proud to be part of such a great group.

To everyone that I taught chakra fold to – every single one of you was a delight to teach. Thank you for letting me share with you.

Thank you again to all of the organizers – doubly so to those who shouldered the low-key non-teaching work. It was noticed and appreciated! :-)

I think this TFW was twice as good as the last one, and I suspect only half as good as next year will be.

Only 11 months to go! yay!

    Hugs to you all!

poi and fire   4 years, 9 months ago · View

    Hey Jim,

If you are interested in poi as well as flagging, there are online

poi classes at http://www.templeofpoi.com. People who paid for at least

one class at Texas Flagger Weekend got a coupon good for the entire

cost of the beginning online poi class. I’ve taken a look at the online

class and I think they are quite good, with video from multiple views

    with and without poi.

While I think there is nothing like in-person instruction, the online classes are an excellent additional resource for someone like yourself

that is far from LA, Dallas, and NYC. If you have trouble redeeming your coupon, please let me know, I know the owner and I can help. :-)

As for Fire Poi, many people (incuding myself) in SF have bought

their fire poi heads from http://www.flammaaeterna.com/. They

make a sturdy product that is well-regarded.
