My History

How would you describe yourself as a flagger?

What is it about flagging that you enjoy the most?

Getting in touch with myself.
Sharing with other artists.

How long have you been flagging? How did you get started?

Who has inspired or taught you?

In no particular order: Phillip Bryan, Isa Issacs, Randy Earwood.

Do you make your own sets? Can you describe what kind you make?

I’ve made my own silk flags, poi, and fans, although not recently.

What are your favorite flagging quotes?

The truest help we have to give, is given by simply being ourselves.

What advice do you give to beginning flaggers?

Try to practice several times a week, even if it is only for 10 minutes at a time. It really does help to flag and then sleep on it.

By Daniel G. Van Olst Materials Needed: A long thin waterproof form, maybe 4 or 5 inches wide and about as long as the diagonal on your flags. I use one side of a Dharma fabric box covered in Saran Wrap, so it’s about 5″ by 45″. About a dozen rubber bands, big newspaper ones, not the wimpy little [...]

By Daniel Van Olst I am being watched by an audience of one. A warm night breeze blows off the desert and brushes my cheek, touches my flags, as they slide past my arms, my legs, my face. The only music is from the palms murmuring in the wind, far above me as I flag, as I [...]

Flag bag lost at Real Bad Sept 27   2 years, 4 months ago · View

My friend Kennon Jackson lost his flag bag at Real Bad this last Sunday
(1015 Folsom, San Francisco, on September 27, 2009). He’s not a member of
SpinTribe so he asked me to post this for him.

It is a two-toned black & charcoal Quicksilver Backpack that contains about 4 to
5 sets of flags in the back zip pocket. The front zip pocket contains our two
t-shirts: one green short-sleeved t-shirt and a white tank top.

He would really love to get it back. If you have it, please send me a message
    or email and
I will put you in touch with him.

    Thanks much!

    Dan

Flag bag lost at Industry Sat Sept 26   2 years, 4 months ago · View

    Hello all:

Unfortunately I lost my flag bag at Industry (119 Utah San Francisco) this last
    Saturday, September 26.

It is a small, triangular bag, red and black, with my name (VANOLST) marked on
    it.

It has one set of flag poi in it. They have paintings of men on them that were
airbrushed onto them by a friend.

They have a great deal of sentimental value and I would dearly love to get them
    back,
    no questions asked!

Please send me a message if you have them!

    Thanks

    Dan

Dan, You are an amazing spirit and you were one of the brightest shining stars at Texas Flagger Weekend 4! You are an excellent instructor & mentor and I LOVE watching you move!

Watching you play my Larry Reigel "Mexican Village" pair of fans to my CD mix was the icing on the cake, and it made me cry! And your fire poi-spinning was mesmerizing! Thank you for sharing so much with all of us so openly & freely, Dan.

I’ll get some more music to you soon and take care, my friend!

    Dan,

I felt flatterred that you offerred me to flag your spectacular set that nite on stage. No doubt that your sweet offering made a remarkable memory in my flagging life, simply you were the first person who volunteerly asking me to flag with his own set…:) Of course, thanks for some sweet flaggers allowed me to "play" with their sets after I asked for their permission… Hence, your lovely offering made me feel so great and somewhat emotional… Hopefully, you didn’t get disapointed about how your flags "flying" while I "having fun" with them!

Also, I did notice you spent your time showing some cuties how to flag…that’s really nice! I felt embarrassed that I took much of stage time for myself rather than for them to practice…

    Again, thanks alot, my Dan.

    Cody, a little Asian flagger…

Thanks for sharing your vacation pics! I believe you will be getting a copyright-infringement call from the lawyers for Where in the World is Waldo, but it was worth it.

Daniel – thanks for the wonderful comment about Sum’s and my performance in "Under the Mink". The night was truly magical for us! I have enjoyed your pictures tremendously – can hardly wait until I learn to do some flag making myself!
