Hello All,

I’ve been accepted into the MFA program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.  We arrive around 3:30 pm on Wednesday the 14th.  However, our grad-student housing will not be ready for us until Monday the 19th…….sooooooo… if anyone can spare a few corners of space for we three:

we shall be unobtrusive as possible, angels shall smile upon you, you’ll get to hang out with Tucson-the-Wonder-Dog, my cat is de-clawed and vaccinated and neutered and hides most of the time, AND you shall have my undying loyalty, love, and gratitude.

Dear Spinners, flaggers, hoopers, fanners, and anyone else interested in the FLOW community,

    I cannot emphasize enough how much I want you to support Jody Sperling and Timelapse Dance, especially as she is offering 1/2 price tickets to any Flow-bies.

    I’m stuck in Louisville, otherwise, I would be there with bells on to watch EVERY performance.  Just check out the stuff on her site, and you WILL be amazed, I can promise you that.

Program features two world premieres. Jody Sperling’s electrifying trio Ghosts plays with light, shadow, costuming and projections to create hauntingly ethereal bodies. Bang for the Buck is a comic circus-collage, featuring acrobatic antics, stilt-dancing and hula-hooping, sometimes all at the same time. Students from Barnard College guest with the company to perform a delightful re-take on Loie Fuller’s 1908 original "Ballet of Light." The work is a colorful and cinematic spectacle.

If anyone is in or around New York for these performances, I HIGHLY recommend going to see one.  Jody Sperling is THE preeminent scholar & dancer in the tradition of Loie Fuller, whom many of us regard as our great-great grandmother.

Sperling’s electrifying trio Ghosts plays with light, shadow, costuming and projections to mystify the body’s presence. Bang for the Buck is a comic circus-collage, featuring acrobatic antics, stilt-dancing and hula-hooping (at times all at once). Students from Barnard College guest with the company to perform Sperling’s delightful re-take on Loie Fuller’s 1908 original Ballet of Light. This work is a cinematic spectacle that takes the viewer on a geographic voyage through the sea, the frozen north, blazing fires, the heavens and finally into a garden of butterflies. Hey all,

Speaking to the group as a whole, I think it might be worth investigating some form of insurance policy which any or us—poi spinner, flagger, fanner, etc. could purchase to cover our butts as well as offer some assurance to the venue owner/potential client that we ARE responsible for our actions, and if the unthinkable happens—anybody remember that concert in Rhode Island a few years back where the band used pyrotechnics, which misfired horribly and like 80 people  died?–well, at least we could present an insurance card delineating how much anyone injured would be compensated, or if there was damage to the building, etc.

To me, that just makes common sense, but I invite discussion on this point.

I will say that as an EMT, I HAD to purchase and maintain a personal insurance policy—which was pretty cheap, I think about $150 per year: $11–$13 /month!  EMTS are almost never sued, because it is presumed by the law that they are operating under stressful conditions in the best interests of the patient, but there are always a few ambulance chasing lawyers who will try to nail you…

Similarly, as a Hang Glider pilot, I opted to become a member of the USHGPA—it is not mandatory, and would be difficult to enforce anyway, but I felt a lot better, karma-wise that I could get $1 MILLION DOLLARS of insurance for anybody I might accidentally hit or run into their house or car or whatever.  (It’s pretty much a given that in hang gliding you will only have ONE accident, and 99% of those are fatal to the pilot, but that doesn’t absolve us from the potential harm we could inflict on any innocent bystanders.

Finally, as a man, who is accompanied by a working service animal—who in the ten years I’ve had him, has NEVER bitten anyone—I still cover our butts by keeping an insurance policy on Tucson, just in case he turns into a mad raving beast and eats a baby or something like that.

We have to admit that the art we practice is inherently dangerous—both to ourselves and to others, nobody wants to get hurt or hurt somebody–> which, I suspect is the reason why flagging has become an anathema to club owners in Los Angeles—there have just been too many accidents ostensibly caused by a flagger, who simply shrugged his/her shoulders and walked away.  That  gives us a bad reputation, whish I fought a losing battle against for almost 5 years. (Those of you in So. Cal. Can attest to this negative vibe towards flagging.)

It might behoove us to contact professional groups within the community like the Houston Fly Boys or Axis-Danz and simply ask how they’ve dealt with liability issues as well as troupes whom I’ve not seen on Spintribe, but certainly incorporate all kinds of FLOW arts into their performances, such as The Mutaytor, Lucent Dossier, and Acid Circus.

I am very pleased to announce 2 items.

1.) FLAGGERS has recently been accepted into the Williams Collection of LGBT Media  & Archives at the University of Louisville, one of the largest LGBT collections in the United States.  I know perhaps to some, that may come across as being self congratulatory, and you would be right—that is, you all had a tremendous impact on my research and the resulting documentary, so, please give yourselves a hand, for while many of us profess a yen to stay out of the limelight, in the words of Thomas Hobbes, “Above all else men {and women}–insert, mine– crave Recognition,” and whether you cling to the shadows, every wallflower I’ve observed has seized the opportunity from time to time to blossom into an object of beauty and grace, which most of your co-workers, families, and maybe even friends, would never suspect was hiding inside of you.
You—we–are  beautiful, each and every one. Congratulate yourselves and be Proud!

2.) That said, I am also pleased to announce I will be collaborating with several dance studios here in Louisville, Kentucky teaching flagging from the ground up—including history, technique, and flag-making workshops.  I would like to extend an open invitation to any member of our Tribe passing through to join me, and I’ll have a calendar of upcoming events posted online soon.  
Louisville’s city motto is “Keep Louisville Weird,” and here all along, I thought that was MY motto!

As fate has shone a happy light over Tucson’s head and mine (finally!) we actually have a pretty funky H-O-U-S-E and can provided accommodations for more than a few folks.
