I am coming out of a 4 year hiatus, , , I am located on the east coast, and not in a definitive place as of yet…. I have been denying myself music and dance for many years. After the passing of a dear friend, an inspiration, a fellow flagger, and dj, I realised that life is to short to be anything but happy and true. As that is how she lived everyday of her life. I am rebuilding bridges I have closed and friendships I have ignored. I look forward to reconnecting with those of you I know, and those of you I have yet to meet!!! For me, dancing, flagging and fanning, and maybe one day poi, is not just play on the dance-floor, but an expression of our souls, allowing us to connect with each other and music on a deeper level,
I am a very unconventional flagger. My style ranges from big open and beautiful, to fast spinning rags. I just always have fun! I love being around the energy of other flaggers and learning new moves.
For me it is all about the energy! It is a great medium to connect with the crowd, the dj, and and the music. Flagging opens up my heart and fills me immense joy. Everything seems so simple and just flows together with great beauty!
I have been flagging since 2002. I was fortunate enough to befriend a great dj, Boston based Kris Kono. It was through her that i first saw flaggs. I had been around flaggers for about a year before i ever tried, i had always loved the energy they put out but would get discouraged after about a minute or so and put them down. It was through Kris and the music that she plays that i met other flaggers.
I had overheard my soon to be “flagg daddy” explaining to another flagger how to throw underhand, i thought to myself, i can do that. Later that night i was handed a pair of flaggs and i went off into a corner, by last call i had the basics down and was hungry for more. It was as if i had been flagging for years. I felt the flaggs tapping into my soul that night and my journey began.
I went to NYC to ring in 03. Kris Kono and Phillip Kimball were dj’n a loft party. It was the first time that i had been exposed to so many flaggers and fanners. I had been flagging for about 4 months at the time and was in complete awe. I felt like a kid in a candy store, there were so many beatuiful flaggs and fans there. There is nothing better than having a large group spin together!
My inspiration to flagg comes from my “flagg daddies” Stephen and Dennis. It was the energy that they put out that made me want to flagg. It was them that i watched to learn moves. I considered myself somewhat of sponge, every thing they would do i would copy and eventually make into my own.
Hands down
, Black and Blue 02. I had only been flagging 2 months. The whole week rocked, but inparticular I ended up at the recovery party at Stereo. I was the only one on this small stage flagging, when i noticed someone coming up on the stage with a microphone. Sure enough it was Susan Palmer to perform. Neither she or the security seemed to mind my sharing the stage. What a rush having the entire venue watching!I made my first pair of flaggs, which are one of my favorite pairs. But a seamstress i am not. They broke apart in so many ways that i saught the help of a friend to repair them. I would love to try to tye-dye some silk and see what happens. Hearing about flagg making workshops gets me all excited, and makes me wonder if i’m on the wrong coast.
I love to flagg everywhere! If it’s beside the pool at tea dance, on a boat party, or at a club. I also like to “choke up” on my flaggs making them really small (i call it raggin) so i can fit on even the most crowded dance floor. To hear about the west coasters flagging in to park makes me daydream!

THANK YOU – DJ Yiannis @ Velvet Nation in DC: Saturday – September 3 6 years, 8 months ago · View
POST FOR SPINTRIBE MEMBERS FROM BERNIE MEENAN…Thanks to all who came out and/or supported Velvet Nation and Yiannis on Saturday night. It was great to see you all, and I hope you all had a great time as well! It feels like DC is on it’s way to establishing a “tribe” of some sort (NO, I”m NOT VOLUNTEERING TO START IT!!!), which is a great thing. Regardless, I, Velvet, Yiannis, and others appreciate the go-with-the-flow, easy-to-work-with, and respectful attitudes that continue to be demonstrated by the people involved in flagging events in DC. Likewise, I appreciate the attention that the art of flagging has given DC within the past few years, and I’d like to thank Yiannis, Staci, Ed, etc. for giving us the chance to show that we can bring a little ”extra something” to their
events. Thanks again… and keep having fun!- Bernie

Hey there Amanda Throw-n-F_ck!
Bernie and I really enjoyed meeting you this weekend. The fact that you were staying with Rob & Sean and know Phillip through Flaggercentral made the weekend that much sweeter.
We’ll let you know the next nice afternoon we’re headed into the District to flag in the park.
Take Care and stay in touch.
