    Hi Amy,

I would have joined you, but I’ll be
    going to Miami
to hear Offer Nissim at The Mansion. You should like Anthony also, he’s
    very good.

Let’s talk before I leave on
    Saturday, OK?

FLAGGERS – Feb 28 – Anthony Pappa at Circus

    Hi,

I couldn’t resist posting this – decent music from Anthony Pappa

(check out his MySpace page), free admission, free drink, free parking

if you come before 11PM. Come and join me for fun! Details are

below – print out the email to get the freebies above… I’ve been to

Circus a couple of times – they have a cavernous space, with at least

one smaller room spinning different music. Limited black light, but I

was thinking of bringing my collection of black light to spruce it up

    a bit. See you there!

    Hugs, Amy

spintribe website is down   3 years, 4 months ago · View

    Eric and other SpinTribe members,
It looks like the hosting has not been repaid, but the domain registration is good until Nov. 27, 2009. This was updated Dec. 3, 2008. The hosting for the site is what has expired. The contact information for this is Mark Ludwig. Looks like he resides or resided in Honolulu, HI. There is a phone number to contact him, but I won’t post it here. If any of you know how to contact Mark, or would like me to then let me know. Do keep in mind that Mark is or has been paying not only the domain registration, but also the hosting fees related to spintribe.com out of his pocket, so perhaps some or all of us might want to offer to assist him if you value what this site offers to you.
By the way, it was Mark who gave us the Excel Weight Calculator, and Guide to Fabrics that Glow article on SpinTribe.

    Hey there, everyone!

I kno this is kinda late, but i’m makin’ a last minute trip to Lauderdale this
weekend. My friend’s treating me for my b-day to a vacation down south! Anyone
have any recomendations on what do do while i’m down there? Are there any good
clubs down there that have black light and lend themselves for space to flag?
Any ideas and thoughts would be appreciated.

Hope all of you are well!

Anyone know about FREEFORM FLAGS?   7 years, 9 months ago · View

A whois lookup on the domain name provides information on the registered user of a domain, with address and phone numbers.

Egan used another email address for contact when registering freeformflags.com (egan@…). This domain was also registered by Egan, but with another phone number.

Google does reverse lookup of phone directories when you enter one into its search area. Both phone numbers come up with address information that matches the domain whois data. However, one particular link from this search is a message from Egan indicating his cell phone number. So the first number is his home or office, and the second one is his cell phone.

This phone lookup reveals another business that Egan was involved in (overloadme.com), so he’s quite busy and I’d assume your order was an oversight. Try calling him before assumptions create a mess of things. Good luck!

    Avoiding stress points in silk:

This first suggestion is a way to help “delay” the stress points in silk.  This is a Don Baker technique and I was really surprised at how well it helps this problem and it’s very simple.  Fold the fabric over about an inch or so at each edge, then lay down your string weight and fold twice.  Now you’ve got 4 silk layers on either side of the weights!  Once the weights are sewn in, ad a tight zig-zag stitch about 3/4″ out from the weighted edge where you tend to hold the flag.  This only has to be a few inches in length.  It not only acts as a hand-position indicator, but prevents any stress point from continuing beyond it.

This second suggestion has nothing to do with a corrective procedure, but rather a spinning concept.  5mm silk is for slow fluid flagging and will not fly “fast”.  Don’t weight them down with too much weight, spin them without force, and you’ll see some life out of them.  Your 8mm silks can handle the heavier weights and they are your choice for those big “Star Search” moves.

For those of you who haven’t seen Dino or Xavier flag, they mesmerize your senses not only because of the vortex their flagging produces, but because their transitions are never forced and they fly the appropriate silk weight for the music.

I hope this helps a little.  Everyone have a great Thanksgiving!

Kyle here in San Diego, never posted here before but just kind of keep an eye on things cause I would like to get back into flagging but know one down here is interested or so it seems.

Any how, to your question. I’ve found that if you coat both sides to china silk with “Fray Check” about an inch past each side of where you will sew in the weight. That will generally take care of the problem. If you don’t have “Fray Check” you can mix a little white glue & water together to do the same thing. Problem with that is that is usually washes out or gets soggy if the flag gets wet.

    Good luck!

Hey guys, Spike here. Does anyone have  suggestions for avoiding the stress points in china silk when sewing weights into flags. If I use just the zig zag stitch, stress points appear soon after I’ve flown them a few times & eventually result in holes & tearing.. Also are there any flag making classes left in SF? If so, when & where?

A special thanks to Dino… DUDE!! I love my flags. Thanks

    Linda (and others),

You ask a question that few could describe, even in detail, that would result in anyone new to flagging being able to spin a set of flags like you’ve seen others do.  A video taping of broken down movements, transitions, and hand over/under-passes would be the most beneficial way to learn without someone to instruct you personally.

However, I’ll try to explain the basic figure-eight pattern for starters.  First of all you generally hold the flag on the long edge of the weighted side with the other weighted edge oriented in front of the flag.  Most people hold it somewhere along the middle of the flag length (not the weight length), but everyone is different, and most good flaggers change the position they hold as they flag anyway. Now for the movement part of it.  Pretend you’re holding a paint brush and painting a wall.  Using your right hand make a brush stroke from right to left, now you want to do a stroke back the other way (from left to right), but using the SAME side of the brush as the first stroke!  In order to do that you’d have to twist your wrist clockwise 180 degrees.  Repeat that set of movements in the air in front of your body.  Exaggerate it and you’ll notice you’re actually doing a tight figure-eight movement.  Loosen it up with more exaggeration in the vertical direction of the stroke and you’ll get the idea.  You’d do the opposite movement with your left hand.  It’s easiest to learn one hand at a time.

I definitely can’t give a written description that works for doing both hands together while separating them as you see everyone doing, nor can I explain back-flipping, or other transition moves.  But have fun with this basic of moves.  Everything stems from this one movement, so experiment!  It’s how things got started.

I will fill you in on one incident that marveled me though.  I was in San Diego and a young woman asked if I could show her how to flag.  I showed her just a couple basics, she took a set of flags, and after one minute should have been showing me things!  She was a baton spinner and the moves are nearly the same.  She had those flags positioned in front of her, to her sides, and even behind her. All seamless, and looked like she’d been doing it for years!  Timing is everything also, so close your eyes and listen, and let the flags move to that instead of your vision…if possible.

    Allen

    Hi there again,
I have enjoyed reading some of your statements about the art of fanning and woman flaggers.  I found it interesting.. I was wondering how you all learned how to flag, spin and ect.. is there a way to make your flags spin that is teachable without somebody showing you how?  Please explain to me what you hang on to when your spinning the flags around.. I know how there made but I don’t understand how you get them to twirl around like that… Help.. I am sure this is funny to most of you flaggers but I am really interested to know if I get flags for my youth group how to teach them to use them.
