From clippertom:
Yes, there WILL be an "Odyssey – Part 5" this year,
Yes, it WILL be at a new space,
- and Yes, this notice IS going out late.
When we announced the first Odyssey, we thought of it as a "movable feast": A
party that was not bound by its location, but one shaped by those who came on
board to be part of the journey it offered.
At the same time, we did yearn to have a space that was "home" – and, in
hindsight, we realize that this desire may have blinded us (or, like the Siren’s
song, seduced us) into forgetting our original mission statement: This party
would not be about the "where", but the "who" — a time when, at the start of
Spring, our Tribe could gather share a journey with one another.
So perhaps it is fitting that it is in Book 5 of Homer’s "Odyssey" that the hero
Odysseus at last ends his long captivity by the goddess Calypso: shipwrecked,
he washed ashore on her island, where he remained for many years as a prisoner
of her enchantments.
Most scholars hold that the Gods have mandated Odysseus remain there to teach
him a lesson – though opinions differ as to exactly what that lesson might be,
and whether to view his time in exile as a period of immobility, or as
preparation for the next stage of his life…
What is certain is that it is in Book 5 that Odysseus once again sets sail and
moves on, and so have we — to Columbus72, a comfortable club with plentiful
seating both on and off the main dance-floor, a space for fan/flag folk, and
clean restrooms!
For those who think of the Upper West Side as going to the ends of the earth, we
refer to our source material – wherein great adventures transpire by voyaging
to new places! (Actually, travel to the club is quite easy, with subway stops on
both the IND (A/C) and the IRT (1, 2, and 3) nearby – and cabs readily available
for the trip home…)
