    From Ches:

    Hi everyone,
I was so surprised to find this group. I am really wanting to start
flagging. I have always liked it. One of my best friends was incolor
gaurd in high school. I recently saw Kristine W in concert, and she
had a flagger on stage behind her. He was amazing! Can anyone help me
with a pattern for making the flags? I have already done some dye work
with silk and can’t wait to apply some of that to making flags.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    thanks in advance

    Hey guys.

Haven’t been flagging very long (6-8 mos) and am pretty much self taught, but
really want to find a flagging partner, or some people to flag with up here in
Seattle so I can learn more. I love to flag and would love to just hang out and
flag with some other flaggers. If anyone is up here in seattle….please say
hello. I have been making my own flags…but haven’t tried painting silk with
paint…and have seen some beautiful ones done like this. Any suggestions?

Also, all I can find is small curtain weight. Anyone know where I can get some
heavier weight so I don’t have to sew in more than one strip of weights?

    Thanks so much

    Andrew

    Hello from an Oklahomo –

I’m interested in learning more flagging techniques, performances,
etc. I am ‘new to flagging’ picking up what I do just from watching
others on videos and one performance at Crobar in Chicago last year.
I want to learn more, for the performance sake of it; and I am
intrigued by the spiritual side I’ve heard mentioned. Also want to
learn more about fans (yes, I’ve been told that’s ‘old’, but I still
want to learn) and more about being a glowstix ninja. :-)

Love the lights, music, men, muscles, but not into the drugs. I let
the music and movements be my high.

    Sincerely,
    Brian

hi all, i’m a raver in texas who goes to parties all the time. i
started flagging a month or so ago and just completed my second set
of flags! i’ve been spinning poi for about a year and that translated
immediately into some flow. one thing, i added a 5" piece of
ballchain with a swivel to the flag, right where you hold the weights
for spinning. i made a small fingerloop harness and attached it to
the swivel. with the swivel i can now weave without twisting, do
siderotations, everything possible with poi now with flags. theres a
slight delay between your hands and the flags which takes getting
used to but it’s so much fun. i’ll post pictures soon. peace

    Hey J,

If you check out the groups page on yahoo you will find some links to sites of some of the members and instructions on how to make your own flags. I have only been a member since the beginning of the summer and found some great resources here, and some of the best guys around to help when you need them!!

So far I don’t know of any books or sites that teach you how to spin, it’s mostly trial and error anyway. That’s the best way you can learn and you can make up your own moves.

Hope my tad bit of info helps, but we are all here whenever you need us!! Feel free to join in on the group!!

HOLA PAPI!  Welcome to the group.  If you want to make flags the best places to get info, instructions, fabric guides and even the one and only worlds most fierce and yummiest weight calculator for flags go to http://www.spintribe.com home of the equally as fierce and most certainly YUMMIEST flagger on the net Mark Adam Ludwig.  He has let some of the tricks outta his flag bag (well he lets me out from time to time) including fabric links and links to Don Baker, and sites by Xavier (CForce) that also have very useful info.  Also if you spin those stick things with glowing snot in them (LOL just kidding) then I am sure you are familiar with  http://www.homeofpoi.com which has instructional MPEGS and animated files that teach the step by step POI moves which are similar to the basic concept of flagging.
Newho hope this was helpful.  Give me a shout out if you would like any further tricks errrr I mean tips.

    Hey Jeremy,

I was very glad to see that Greg (flagboyoh@…) directed to you Home of
    Poi. It’s a great resource.

You’ll discover that there are lots of things to spin besides glow sticks. I
recommend getting a set of UV-reactive Zuni poi. They’re good for learning,
and great for performing at clubs, especially those that have black lights
set up for flaggers. You can get them at Renegade Juggling
(http://www.renegadejuggling.com). You can also attach those little key
chain LED lights to them — I use Rav’n Party Lights (Ribbon style); the
crystal diffusers look great. There’s a little clip where the bean bag
attaches to the string, so you just slip the light on there. The light is so
small, you won’t even notice it.

The Home of Poi site is rather fire-centric, but their DVD is a good place
to start learning if you’re geographically isolated. They offer a package
with beginner poi and the DVD, but I don’t like their beginner poi as much
as the Zunis. (That combo package is how I learned originally.) The site
also has lots of little video clips that can help you learn moves.

Neon Husky (http://www.neonhusky.com/) sells pretty cool light rigs called
Quantum Leashes, but they’re not for beginners. You can give yourself a
pretty good whack, and break quite a few lights, if you’re still learning.
(Likewise, do NOT get the Beaming Balls from Home of Poi — unless you’d
    like a nice concussion.)

The fire chains site also has some useful information.
    http://www.firechains.com/.

I also have quite a bit of regional information, though it’s mostly West
Coast. I’m in San Francisco, and I actually teach poi through the Temple of
Poi (www.templeofpoi.com). I also have contacts in Los Angeles, Portland,
and Seattle. Let me know where you live, and I can give you more
    information.

I hope all of this is helpful. Please feel free to write me directly if
    you’d like any more info.

    Jim
