Hey all,  in the madness of weekly spinning of my silks, I have come across a really awful problem- tattered and torn syndrome!  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!   It’s the area where I spin the flags most from, I need mending tips or is anyone in the NYC area willing to mend them for me for a couple of bucks?   Mykel   http://www.mykel.info

In some circumstances, Sobo fabric glue can be useful to seal the fabric or patch it.

This happened to me also with my favorite set. I thought about using a reinforcing cloth like the "ribbon idea", but I ended up just rolling over the silk in the spots where it was weak and resewing it. It will probably wear out soon in the same spot though. I think the r
    ibbon idea is great!!

    From mark:

I’ve had the same problem arise in the past. Took my flags to World Cleaners on 10th street off sixth ave. (think it’s 10th), and had the seamstress mend them as if she was hemming a pair of pants the difference being that the fold over was only where the fabric thinning from stress occurred.

Hope you all have a great time this weekend, heading to Lauderdale tomorrow morning, anyone recommend a flag friendly venue for Saturday evening?

    Cheers-

    Mark

I did the rolling thing first and it didn’t quite work
for me which is why i went to the ribbon and , the
ribbon had worked well for me so for.

That would be a fun idea.  Looks like the fold over and reinforce is what may have to work right now.  I play really big tie dyes and those are my most prized toys.   Thanks all!   Mykel   save the date!!!!! 4.11.06 http://www.myspace.com/loveandmarriage

I am wondering if there is a way to build the flags with handles!  so’s to accomodate tattered and torn syndrome!   Mykel

    From Joseph Mattera:

Hi, Mykel. Although I have no plans to haul a sewing machine into
Roseland, I have a few techniques for reinforcing the silk. Although I
strengthen the grip area when I first make my flags, I can and have
reinforced the tattered ones, as well. I try to avoid adding
additional fabric to the flags, especially the silks, since it will
offset the weight when tossing them airborne.

Contact me privately or we can talk at one of the events over the
    weekend..

well there is flag poi which is flags with handles but
you can ‘t make them big and square like flags. maybe
if you go ahead and reinforce the area you know you’ll
wear out first before you start spinning that would
    help.
